CPHS Cross Country: Boys finish 4th of 18 at Broken Arrow, Girls take 14th

The Charles Page High School Cross Country team traveled to Broken Arrow this past weekend for their first 5K run of the season. The meet was both the longest run and the largest field of competitors that the Sandites have taken on this year, and the previously undefeated boys team slipped to fourth place for the first time after coming in first at their prior two runs. The girls team placed fourteenth.

Junior 800-meter National Champion Aden Baughman led the Sandites like always, but the longer distance pushed him back to eleventh in the overall standings after finishing in first and second place the prior two weeks. Baughman had a time of 17:12. Jacob Smith, who was sixth among the Sandites last week, improved to second on his team with a 26th place finish in 17:37. The Sandites were without Ian Baustert, who usually takes the number two spot. Lincoln Christian's Luke Murphy finished in first place with a time of 15:55. Bartlesville won the meet with four top-ten finishers.

Sara Abbet was first among the Lady Sandites, finishing in 31st place with a time of 22:32. Leading Lady Sandite Tiqvah Soap was absent from the race. Chezney Kelley improved to second in the lineup after finishing sixth the week before. She placed 65th overall in 24:15. Bartlesville's Rilee Rigdon won the race by a landslide, finishing in 18:41 and helping her team to a first-place finish.

Lincoln Christian's Jade Crawford, who lives in Sand Springs, finished in 53rd place in 23:34.

CPHS Boys' Cross Country Team wins Pryor Invitational, led by Aden Baughman in 1st Place

The Charles Page High School Cross Country teams started the season this past weekend at the Mid-America Tiger Cross Country Invitational in Pryor. The Boys' team took first place, led by Aden Baughman with a 10:40 time to win the two-mile run.

Baughman, a junior State Qualifier, is coming off a USATF 800-meter National Championship win just under a month ago. Varsity Cross Country meets typically are 5 kilometers, but the two-mile start to the season gave the mid-range runner an advantage for his first win of the season with a five-second margin of victory over the runner-up.

Two other Sandites made the top-five. Ian Baustert took third place with a 10:57 finish and Nelson Yazzie was right behind him in fifth place at 10:58.

Landin Green placed ninth in 11:10, Jaelyn Jackson took 17th place in 11:30, Kaegan Murray placed 23rd in 11:45, and Phillip Elleman placed 24th in 11:46. Ten schools participated in the event and Tahlequah Sequoyah came in runner-up.

The Lady Sandites were led by Tiqvah Soap in 25th place with an 8:09 performance in the 1850-meter run, followed by Sara Abbet in 28th place with an 8:13 performance. Elizabeth Watts placed 31st in 8:24, Stephanie Genn placed 42nd in 8:35, Chezney Kelley placed 46th in 8:43, and Madelynn Adams placed 66th in 9:41. The girls placed seventh out of eight teams. Tahlequah Sequoyah took first place.

The Sandites will return to action Saturday, September 2nd in a Highway 97 rivalry run at Sapulpa. The race will be one mile for the girls and two miles for the boys. It will be held at the Sapulpa Westside Sports Complex

CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden selected as All-Tulsa World Player of the Year Finalist

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate and Oklahoma State University freshman Cheyenne Walden was selected as one of three finalists for the All-Tulsa World Athlete of the Year awards for both Track and Cross Country. Walden is the most decorated OSSAA athlete in Sand Springs history with nine State Championships.

In her high school career she has won one 800 meter run and set a personal record of 2:17.58 for fourth place at the State Tournament her junior year.

She has won twelve 1600 meter runs and set a personal record of 4:57.07 this past season for her second-consecutive State title in the event. She also won the Oklahoma Track Coaches Association (OTCA) Meet of Champions this year, and holds two Regional titles and one Frontier Valley Conference (FVC) title.

The further she runs, the better she does. In the 3200 meter run she has won three State titles, 25-straight events, and 29 total events. She holds three titles in the 3200 and hasn’t been defeated since placing third in State her freshman year. She holds four Regional and Conference titles and has a PR of 10:45.43.

In the fall Cross Country season she is a four-time State Champion, four time Regional Champion, and four-time Conference Champion. She has won two one-mile runs with a PR of 5:21, ten two-mile runs with a PR of 11:19.50, and seventeen 5K-runs with a PR of 17:32. Final selection for the Athlete of the Year will be made at the All World Awards dinner on July 8th at Marriot Southern Hills.

CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden and Aden Baughman win Meet of Champions

Two members of the Charles Page High School Track and Field team were invited to the Oklahoma Track Coaches Association (OTCA) Meet of Champions in Moore. Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden and sophomore Aden Baughman both won 6A State Championship gold last week in Yukon and repeated their victories Tuesday against competitors from all classes.

Walden, a nine-time State Champion, holds one Meet of Champions medal in Cross Country, but has never competed in Track before.

Walden finished the 1600 meter run in 5:02.58, the third-best time of her career, with a 13.66 second margin of victory over the runner-up. She defeated 3A State Champion Mandy Sykora (5:16.79), Class A State Champion Harlie Schmeling (5:20.9), and 3A Runner-Up Aubrey Schmidt (5:25.40). She finished the 3200 meter run in 10:57.45, 54.73 seconds ahead of the runner-up, 3A State Champ Sykora (11:52.18).

Baughman made his first trip to the Meet of Champs after winning his first State Title last weekend in the 800 meter run, running the fastest time of any Oklahoma High School student this season at 1:53.16. His Meet of Champs time wasn't far behind his State time at 1:53.54. He defeated 4A State Champion Dillon Phillips (1:54.26), 4A Runner-Up Tanner Blackmore (1:59.63), and Class A Runner-Up Andres Slaughter (2:05.93).

Walden is one of three members of the Class of 2017 who will continue her athletic career at OSU, while Baughman will have two more years with the Sandites.
