CPHS Softball: Lady Sandites finish season with first winning record since 2016

Sand Springs has never been as competitive in slow pitch as they are in fast pitch. Seniors rarely compete in the spring, and the girls have never qualified for the State Tournament. They came close this year, however, finishing with their first winning record in three seasons.

Of the five college-bound Sandite sluggers, only one returned for the spring season, and Cowley County Community College-commit Elizabeth Luttrell led her particularly talented underclassmen to a 14-9 record.

Luttrell handled the vast majority of the pitching and went 11-9 on the mound with a 10.33 ERA, 2.99 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts. She also led the team in hits (41), RBI (47), home runs (17), and grand slams (3). She hit home runs in five-straight games to start the season.

Six players batted over .500 on the season, led by junior standout Sabrina Usher with a .638 batting average, 1.29 slugging average, and .716 on-base percentage. Usher had 33 runs, 37 hits, 14 homers, 38 RBI, and one grand slam. She also had a team-high 16 walks, mostly intentional.

Luttrell and Usher tied with a team-high three homers in a single game. Both did it in the third game of the season against Owasso. The two also had a team-best five consecutive games with an RBI.

Felicity Horn led the team with 29 singles. Makenna Skaggs led with 7 doubles. Skaggs, Horn, and Raegan Rector all had two triples apiece.

Madison Lee, Horn, Rector, Rachael Jones, Avery Tanner, Skaggs, and Mackenzie Bechtold all hit dingers this season. Skaggs, Horn, Rector, Usher, Luttrell, and Bechtold all hit 50% or higher at the plate.

Rector scored runs in a team-best thirteen consecutive games while Skaggs had a team-best nineteen-straight games with a hit. Bechtold and Tanner had seven games apiece with perfect plate performances. Tanner had five perfect games in a row with hits on ten-straight at-bats.

Sophomore Aliyah Taff was the only other pitcher for the team, earning a 3-0 record, 7.44 ERA, and 2.5 WHIP. Bechtold was in on a team-high eleven double plays.

The season came to an end with a 2-2 performance at the Regional Tournament Wednesday at Union. The girls shut out Enid 14-0 in the first game and beat Union 20-8 in game three, but fell 12-10 and 22-12 to the host Redskins in the best-of-three finals series.

Sand Springs outhit the Pacers 14 to 4 for their second shut out of the season. Rector scored on an error in the first inning, then the girls scored the remaining thirteen runs in the third for a run-rule victory. Rector, Horn, Luttrell, and Skaggs hit RBI singles. Usher had a 2RBI triple, and Tanner and Horn both batted in runs on doubles.

The Sandites never led in their first game against Union, but tied it 10-10 going into the seventh, despite being outhit 21 to 14. Usher hit two solo homers and Lee scored a three-run blast in the second. After Usher’s first two hits the Redskins intentionally walked her twice.

Union made the mistake of pitching to Usher in their rematch, and she went yard twice more. She was three-for-three at the plate with three runs and six RBI. Luttrell also had two homers: a solo shot and a grand slam.

Usher gave the Sandites a 3-0 lead with her first dinger, then Luttrell sent one over the same section of fence. Jones had a two-run homer that same inning.

The Redskins cut it to 7-6 in the top of the third, but the visitors quickly retaliated. Tanner, Rector, and Horn all batted in runs before Luttrell’s grand slam made it 14-6. Tanner walked in a free run in the fourth then Horn scored a two-run single before Usher’s three-run homer concluded the run-rule win.

Union rallied in the final game, outhitting the Sandites 27-16. Sand Springs led after the first and second innings, but went scoreless through three and fell too far behind to come back.

Rector hit a solo blast in the first, then Horn, Usher, and Skaggs scored runs for a 4-0 lead. Union tied it up briefly, Luttrell hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second, then the Redskins went on a warpath.

Both teams had their best inning in the sixth. Union scored eight for a 22-5 lead. Horn hit a 2RBI double, Usher hit an RBI single, Luttrell hit a 3RBI homer, and Jones hit an RBI double for the final run of the game.

The Lady Sandites improved from a 9-12 Slow Pitch record in 2018. The Fast Pitch team went 23-9 in the fall and won their fourth-straight Regional title. They are coached by Shelli Brown in her 22nd year. Brown holds a 550-303 fast pitch record, but slow pitch records are harder to find. The Lady Sandites are 65-51 since 2014 in the spring.

In addition to Luttrell, four other Lady Sandites have also signed collegiate letters of intent. Jacie Taber is headed to Missouri State University, Kimi Presnell will play at Rogers State University, Cameron Clemons will compete at Southern Arkansas University, and Madelyn Blair will play at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

CPHS Softball: Sandites shut out Sapulpa 19-0 in three innings

Fifteen runs in a single inning were all the Sandites needed to completely shut down their Highway 97 rivals. The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls softball team (12-7) rolled to a lopsided 19-0 run-rule victory against Sapulpa (1-13) Monday afternoon, but the game was book-ended by a pair of losses.

On Thursday the Sandites fell 16-10 to No. 15 Owasso (10-10). The Rams took a 2-0 lead right out of the gate. Mackenzie Bechtold and Rachael Jones scored runs in the second inning to tie it, but Owasso scored four more in the third and seven in the fourth for a 13-4 advantage and never looked back.

The Rams hit six home runs to the Sandites’ two. Elizabeth Luttrell hit a two-run dinger in the fifth and Madison Lee had a lead-off solo shot in the bottom of the seventh for the final run of the game. Owasso only outhit Sand Springs 19 to 17 but the Sandites stranded thirteen runners in the game.

Sand Springs didn’t need a single homer in their 19-0 win against Sapulpa. They outhit the Chieftains 16 to 1 and received five walks in the outing. Makenna Skaggs led the Sandites offensively with three hits, three runs, and four RBI, with two doubles. Six players were perfect at the plate, including Lee, who scored four RBI and hit a triple.

Monday didn’t end on a high note, however. After thumping Sapulpa the girls were bested 19-7 by 5A No. 2 Kellyville (25-4). Luttrell scored a team-best three RBI on a homer and Avery Tanner went two-for-two at the plate with one homer. Sabrina Usher also had a perfect hitting performance with three singles. Seven Ponies hit homers, including a grand slam from Madison Neighbors.

CPHS Softball: Luttrell hits walk-off grand slam in 18-17 win over Jenks

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School softball team (11-5) got into a home run derby with No. 12 Jenks (18-16) Tuesday afternoon as the two teams combined for 35 runs on 35 hits in the eight-inning affair.

The Trojans led for the entire game till Rachael Jones tied it at 13-13 with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jenks responded by scoring four runs on two homers in the top of the eighth, but the Sandites loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, scored one on an intentional walk, and secured the victory with a grand slam from Cowley County Community College-signed senior Elizabeth Luttrell.

Jenks scored six runs right out of the gate with a four-hit, two-walk, two-error first inning. Sand Springs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but stranded three and scored only one run on a single from Makenna Skaggs.

Freshman Natalie Rodman hit a solo homer for Jenks in the second inning, then Raegan Rector went yard for the Sandites to make it 9-6 in the fourth. Chaney Hupp and Luttrell both smashed three-run dingers in the sixth, and Skaggs had a solo shot to make it 13-12. Golliday kicked off the extra inning with a solo blast, then Rodman scored three more.

Leading Sandite slugger Sabrina Usher never got to swing, receiving five intentional walks, but recorded three runs and the eighth-inning walk-in RBI. Luttrell led the Sandites in scoring with two runs and eight RBI. Rector went a perfect five-for-five at the plate, scoring five runs and two RBI.

CPHS Softball: Sandites in a slump, lose five on the road

After starting the season on a ten game win streak, the Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (10-5) has fallen into a bit of a slump and lost their last five games.

4/8/19 CPHS 12 Tahlequah Sequoyah 11

The Lady Sandites edged out the fall fast-pitch State Champions from 5A No. 9 Tahlequah Sequoyah (13-10) by a single run Monday morning at the Jenks Festival. They took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Indians scored four runs in the top of the sixth for the one-run lead.

Sand Springs outhit Sequoyah 19 to 16 with five extra-base hits. Sabrina Usher hit two home runs and a double and Raegan Rector tripled. Usher scored two runs and four RBI in the close win. Her first homer tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the first and her second secured the walkoff victory.

4/8/19 Jenks 12 CPHS 1

Sand Springs suffered their first loss Monday afternoon against No. 16 Jenks (14-15), who they previously run-ruled 11-1 in the Haskell Tournament finals just three days prior.

Makenna Skaggs brought in Rector on a single in the top of the first, but the Trojans tallied six in the second inning to take the lead once and for all. The Sandites managed a season-low six hits, stranded six runners, and lost by run-rule after the top of the fifth. The Trojans intentionally walked leading-slugger Usher twice.

4/9/19 Tahlequah Sequoyah 7 CPHS 6

Next to avenge their prior loss was the Lady Indians from Sequoyah High School. Just like their prior day’s meeting, the game was decided by a single run Tuesday morning at the Broken Arrow festival.

Sand Springs scattered four singles for three runs in the top of the first, but stranded loaded bases in the second and the Trojans took the 5-3 lead with six hits in the bottom of the inning.

Skaggs reclaimed the advantage with a two-run triple in the fifth, then Sequoyah took it right back with an RBI single and an error for the final run of the game.

Madison Lee was a perfect three-for-three at the plate. Felicity Horn scored a team-high three runs, while Skaggs scored a team-high three RBI.

4/9/19 BAHS 7 CPHS 3

Perennial powerhouse No. 4 Broken Arrow (17-7) stumped the Sandites in three games over three days. On Tuesday morning they rallied from a 3-1 deficit with a four-run fourth inning. The Sandites actually outhit the Tigers eleven to ten but stranded eight.

4/11/19 BAHS 16 CPHS 8

The Tigers tallied four runs in the first inning, five in the second, and five in the third, dominating the game from the very beginning for a five-inning run-rule victory. They totaled fifteen hits to the Sandites’ eight, including seven home runs. Freshman standout Kyleigh Lamont went yard three times for the Tigers, including a grand slam.

Skaggs had a career day, going three-for-three at the plate with two doubles and a triple, scoring two runs and an RBI. She wasn’t done yet.

4/11/19 BAHS 15 CPHS 5

Skaggs’s hot streak continued into game two of the double-header, scoring a run and three RBI with a homer. It wasn’t enough, however. The Broken Arrow bats blasted five more out of the park and totaled sixteen hits, while Sand Springs only managed seven in the four-inning game. Rachael Jones also went yard for Sand Springs.

Elizabeth Luttrell pitched all six games this week and is 7-5 on the season.

CPHS Softball: Sandites win Haskell Tournament, run-rule Jenks 11-1

The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (9-0) continued their undefeated start to the season Friday night, dominating No. 15 Jenks (8-11) in the Haskell Tournament finals. The Lady Sandites outhit their foes 14 to 5 in an 11-1 four-inning run-rule victory.

Sabrina Usher kicked off the night with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but the Sandites really put it away in the second inning.

Three singles loaded the bases and the Trojans gave up runs on a walk and a single from Aliyah Taff. Raegan Rector hit a three-run triple to clear the bases, then came in on a triple from Felicity Horn. Horn scored on a line out by Usher and Mackenzie Bechtold hit a RBI single for a 9-0 advantage.

The Trojans finally got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to a triple from Jaycee Watson, who tagged up on a line out.

Usher singled in Rector in the bottom of the fourth, Luttrell singled to load the bases, and Horn walked in to secure the ten-run margin and the win.

Luttrell got her sixth win on the mound this season, throwing five hits and no walks.

Sand Springs softball will return to action Monday at 1:30 p.m. when they rematch the Trojans in the first round of the Jenks Festival.

CPHS Softball: Sandites sweep Haskell Tournament pool, headed to Championship

The undefeated Class 6A No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team improved to 8-0 Friday afternoon, winning their pool at the Haskell tournament. They prevailed 10-5 against 5A No. 18 Berryhill (7-5), 14-2 against 4A No. 17 Haskell (11-13), and 6-2 against No. 19 Bixby (4-13).

The Lady Sandites scored in four out of five innings against Berryhill, outhitting their foes 15-7 with three home runs.

The Maidens loaded the bases with singles in the top of the first and scored one on an error but stranded three. Felicity Horn went yard in the bottom of the inning to take the lead once and for all. Sabrina Usher hit a single and Makenna Skaggs hit a second homer for a 4-1 advantage.

Avery Tanner scored on an RBI single from Raegan Rector in the second inning, Usher hit a homer in the third, and the Sandites loaded the bases in the fourth. Aliyah Taff doubled in two, Rector hit a sacrifice fly, and Taff scored on an error to make it 10-1. Berryhill tried to stage a comeback in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and two walks.

The victory over the tournament hosts was even more dominant as the Sandites outhit the Haymakers 17-5 for the run-rule victory in only three innings.

Haskell scored two runs in the first inning on RBI doubles from Elise Bowman and Chassi Dowdy, but those would be their only points of the game. Luttrell hit a three-run homer to score Horn and Usher, then Rachael Jones hit a three-run homer to score Skaggs and Bechtold for a 6-2 lead.

Hawkins scored on a sacrifice hit from Horn in the second inning and Usher hit a two-run homer on the next pitch. Bechtold scored two on a single to make it 11-2. With two outs and loaded bases in the bottom of the third, Horn hit a two-run single and Usher brought in Rector to secure the victory.

The game against Bixby was the lowest-scoring performance of the season for the Sandites and their first game without a home run, but it was enough. Taff (3-0) pitched five hits and four walks in the win.

Neither team scored in the first inning but Madison Lee scored Skaggs on a single in the bottom of the second, Bechtold scored on a fielder’s choice, and Hawkins hit an RBI single to score Tanner for the 3-0 lead.

Alyssa Galliart got the Spartans on the board, scoring on a single from Ashlyn Seager in the top of the third. The Sandites responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Horn scored on a fielder’s choice and Bechtold batted in Usher on a single.

Bixby scored their final run in the top of the fifth when Betsy Bales scored on a fielder’s choice, and Rector scored the Sandites’ final run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth.

Luttrell (5-0) got the wins against Haskell and Berryhill. She threw seven hits and three walks against Berryhill and five hits and no walks against Haskell. She also pitched one inning of relief against Bixby, walking two with one strikeout.

Sandite softball will return to action Friday night at 6:45 p.m. when they play No. 15 Jenks (5-10) for the tournament title.
