CPHS Baseball: Sandites headed to Owasso Regional, first game Wednesday

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team will play their first two Regional playoff games Wednesday afternoon in Owasso. They’ll have to win at least one to stay alive in the post-season.

The Sandites finished the regular season 21-9 after going 22-10 in last year’s regular season. They improved over the prior season in several categories. Their 8-4 district record is their best since 2015.

6.3 runs per game is the best Sandite offense since 2016, and their 3.3 runs allowed is their best defense since at least 2012. This is their third-straight season with six shutouts, and their first season since 2012 without a shutout loss. But the season isn’t over yet.

Sand Springs will face Union (11-21) Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The District 4 Champions from Owasso (30-5) will play the Redskins at 12:00 p.m. Sand Springs and Owasso will meet at 6:00 p.m. The tournament is double-elimination.

Thursday could see anywhere between one and three games depending on how Wednesday shakes out. If all three teams have one loss after Wednesday, then Sand Springs and Union will play again on Thursday, with the winner taking on Owasso. The day will kick off at 3:00 p.m.

Owasso beat Union 10-0 and 8-5 last week in district action. Sand Springs beat Union 5-3 two weeks ago in a non-district game. The Rams and Sandites have yet to play each other.

The Rams are ranked 42nd in the nation by PerfectGame and have won thirteen State titles, most recently in 2015. They own 32 Regional titles and haven’t failed to make the State Tournament since 2014. Union is the defending State Champion with seven State titles.

Sand Springs has advanced to State eight times, most recently in 2011. They have made it to the semifinals three times and played in the Championship only once, falling to Will Rogers in 1978.
