CPHS Baseball: Sandites win 9th-straight 7-1 over Ponca City, Askew strikes out seven

Cale Savage recorded one hit, one run, and one RBI in a 7-1 victory over Ponca City.

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (13-6, 3-2) won their ninth-straight game Monday evening and improved to a winning district record with a 7-1 home victory over Ponca City (4-17, 1-6).

It was a slow starter with only six hits between the two teams over the first four innings. The Sandites put it away in the fifth as Braden Askew pitched a pair of strikeouts and brought his team in for a seven-run melee.

Kameron Adcock reached on one error and scored on another and Askew hit a sacrifice fly to score Ty Steelman. Tyler Ash was hit by pitch and Cal Watkins and Riley Rutledge hit singles to load the bases, then Cale Savage and Kyler Copeland were hit by pitch for a pair of free runs. Steelman singled in Savage and Rutledge and Ash scored on wild pitches for a 7-0 lead before the onslaught came to a close.

The Sandites stranded loaded bases in the bottom of the sixth and Ponca City averted the shutout as Will Wyatt singled to score Maison Steelmon, but Askew struck out the final batter to bring the game to a close.

Askew (3-2, 6-4) improved to a winning season record on the mound, serving up five hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts.

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action Tuesday afternoon with a rematch in Ponca City at 5:00 p.m.
