Against Claremore they barely lost the first set 25-23 in a back and forth affair that saw twelve tie scores and seven lead changes. Jacelyn Smith and Payton Robbins scored three kills apiece in the set but took their last lead at 21-19 before the Zebras surged ahead for the win.

The Sandites won the next set 25-22. They jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead before Claremore went on a five-point run to make it 8-6. The Zebras stayed out front till 14-14 and the set tied six times before Sand Springs took the lead for good at 18-17. Layla Lenex and Sophie Singleton capped the win with a block.

Sand Springs won nine-straight rallies in set three for a 9-1 lead and though the Zebras cut it as close as 16-10, they never managed to tie it up and the Sandites coasted to a 25-16 win.

Game four was another close one at 25-23. Claremore won six in a row for the 7-4 lead and the Sandites didn’t tie it up again till 21-21 with a kill from Lenex. They traded blows till 23-23 before the Zebras secured the win. They only led twice in the tie-breaker set and after tying it at 12-12, Claremore won the final three points.

Smith and Robbins led the Sandites with 14 kills apiece in the first five-set match of the season for Sand Springs. Lenex was close behind with 11 kills, Jentry Hughes had 31 assists, and Madison Blaylock had 24 digs.

Match two was a clean sweep for Christian Heritage, who won sets of 25-10, 25-11, and 25-19. Smith served a pair of aces for the 3-1 lead in game one, but the Crusaders battled back and never again gave up the lead. The first two sets both ended on seven-point runs for Heritage. Game three was more competitive as the Sandites opened on a 4-0 run with an ace from Hughes and kills from Smith and Robbins, but the Crusaders responded with a six-point run and never trailed again. Robbins led the team with seven kills, Hughes had 11 assists, and Blaylock made 20 digs in the loss.

The final match of the round-robin tournament was delayed nearly two hours on Saturday so the teams agreed to play a best-of-three match instead of best-of-five. The Sandites won sets of 27-25 and 25-22 against Rejoice Christian (4-15) in the de facto fifth place match.

After Singleton scored the opening point of the match, Rejoice went on a four-point run and didn’t give up the lead till the very end. The Eagles scored five in a row for their biggest lead at 21-16, but the Sandites battled back to tie it three times before taking the lead at 25-24. Robbins scored back-to-back kills for the win.

The Sandites led for the majority of the second set, but both teams had their hot streaks. Olivia Dewitt scored a pair of aces in a six-point run for the Sandites at 12-6, but the Eagles had a five-point streak of their own to tie it at 14-14. It was back and forth from there but the Eagles took their last lead at 22-21 before Robbins scored a kill and Singleton made a block en rout to the win.

Robbins led the way yet again with nine kills, followed by Lenex with six. Blaylock had 12 digs and Hughes had 14 assists.

Sandite Volleyball will look to get back to a .500 record when they visit Sapulpa (7-9) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. They previously beat the Chieftains 2-1 at the Sandite Invitational, but this match will count towards Frontier Valley Conference standings. Both teams are 0-2 in league play.

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (6-6) went 1-2 Friday at the Holland Hall Tournament, winning their first match 3-1 against Okay (2-4) before falling 3-0 to Holland Hall (6-2) and Cascia Hall (8-2).

In the match against Okay, the Mustangs won the first set 25-21, thanks in part to twelve errors from the Sandites, who struggled with mistakes throughout the tournament. The game was competitive with four lead changes and five tie-scores, but the Mustangs pulled ahead for good after a four-rally run gave them the 16-13 advantage. Payton Robbins kept the Sandites alive with five kills and two aces in the set.

In game two the Mustangs surged back from a 5-1 deficit to a 9-7 lead before Sand Springs won five-straight rallies and Jacelyn Smith scored a kill to make it 12-9. Robbins and Smith scored four kills apiece in the set and Madison Blaylock had two aces in the 25-17 victory.

The final game was a blowout for the Sandites who took a 22-10 lead and sent in the backups to coast to a 25-14 win. Charley Fahland served up three aces and Lenex had three more kills in the final set. Robbins led all scorers with 16 kills and two aces in the match.

Holland Hall capitalized on Sandite errors for a pair of 25-12 wins, and looked like they might run away with the third set as well, but Sand Springs battled back to force a close one. After losing eight-straight rallies to trail 12-5, the Sandites buckled down and tied it up at 24-24 with a four-point streak capped by a block from Sophie Singleton before falling 26-24. Robbins led the Sandites with seven kills and Lenex had six.

Cascia Hall won sets of 25-15, 25-21, and 25-10 to wrap up the day. Robbins once again led the Sandites with five kills. The Commandos posted 41 kills in the dominant win.

Jentry Hughes had one of the most impressive Sandite performances of the day. Hughes took over setting duties after Tehya Johnson suffered an injury in the Sandite Invitational.
