CPHS Wrestling: Eleven Sandites alive at Regionals with four in semifinals

The No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team is sitting in fourth place after the first session at the 6A-East Regional Friday afternoon. The Sandites have eleven wrestlers still in contention with four on the Championship side of the bracket. The team has 65 points, trailing Broken Arrow at 150.5, Edmond North at 86.5 and Owasso with 76.

Two-time defending State Champion Riley Weir is out for the remainder of the season with a rib injury and ended his career with a 108-34 record. Junior heavyweight Josh Fincannon finished the season 25-17, missing Regionals with appendicitis.

Brendon Wiseley (34-11, 48-19) easily won his first match at 106 against Cooper Britton, taking a 7-0 lead before pinning the Panther in 5:34. In the quarterfinal he pinned Shawnee’s Brenner James in 1:38. He will meet Bartlesville junior Colby Strachan in the semis, who he previously defeated 9-0 earlier this season.

Seth Jones (18-12, 40-26) took a 9-2 lead before pinning Killian McNichol in 3:38 at 126 pounds, then pinned Union freshman Noah Smith in 1:51 in the quarterfinals. He will meet defending Bartlesville State Champion Laif Jones in the semis. The Bruin needed sudden victory overtime to beat the Sandite 6-4 earlier this season.

Scott Patton (27-1, 62-23) got a first round bye at 152 then rolled over Ponca City senior Spencer Shook. Patton scored a takedown in the first, back points in the second, and a reversal in the third before pinning the Wildcat at 5:23. He will wrestle Edmond North senior Jayden Villalobos in the semis. He previously majored the Husky 11-1 in their first meeting this year.

Kaden Glass (30-8) pinned Bartlesville sophomore Curtis Fodor in 1:07 and Enid sophomore Luis Vega in 1:41 at 195 pounds. He will take on Union senior Elijah Tomlin in the semifinals. Glass defeated Tomlin 5-2 and 6-1 earlier this season.

Chris Kirby (30-12, 52-22) wrestled Sapulpa senior Noah Alexander at 160 and won a fall in 2:11, but was in turn pinned by Owasso junior Nate Jacobson. In consolation he will meet Putnam North freshman Devin Cross.

Riley Magee (15-17, 20-22) received a first round bye at 182 and suffered a 12-6 decision at the hands of top-ranked Broken Arrow sophomore Emmanuel Skillings in the quarterfinals. He will wrestle Shawnee sophomore Kyle Heile in consolation.

Justin Smith (1-3) got a first round bye at heavyweight and was pinned in 0:41 by Broken Arrow Senior State Qualifier Noah Cortes in the quarterfinals. In consolation he will meet Sapulpa senior Blake Brooks.

Christian Forbes (28-10) got a first round bye at 113 and wrestled Bartlesville senior State Qualifier David Boucher in the quarterfinals. Boucher got an early takedown but the Sandite escaped and scored two shortly before the buzzer. Boucher tied it with an escape in the second and rolled him in the third for a trio of back points and a 6-3 decision. Forbes will meet Shawnee senior Caleb Nahmahpeah in consolation.

Ethan Norton (0-4) was pinned by Shawnee’s Jordan Lomeli in the first round of 120. He will wrestle Jenks senior Garrett Johnson in consolation.

Blake Jones (22-12) was upset at 132 by Union freshman Caleb Rogers. Jones led 10-0 late in the third with three takedowns and three near fall points, but Rogers got a takedown for the pin at 5:26. In consolation he took an 8-2 lead on Enid’s Logan Herell before pinning him in 2:47. Next up is Jenks junior Garrett Weis, who Jones defeated 6-4 in a dual.

Caleb Phillips (6-19, 8-26) was pinned in 1:38 by Bartlesville senior Brayden Strachan at 138 pounds but pinned Norman freshman Aydin Matanone in 2:01 in consolation. He will return to action against Shawnee junior Jose Cervantes.

Preston Medlin (13-22) was eliminated from contention at 145 pounds. He was pinned in 3:13 by Owasso State Qualifier DJ Anderson and in 1:46 by Broken Arrow junior Chris Moores.

Braden Dahl (9-17, 10-20) wrestled 170 and was eliminated. He was pinned in 1:14 by Bartlesville junior Laken Clowdus and majored 15-3 by Jenks senior Russell Stanley.

Brooks Dudley (10-8) was eliminated from contention at 220. Dudley led Bartlesville’s Jaden James 4-2 with two takedowns in the first period but James took him down for a fall at 2:25. In consolation he wrestled Ponca sophomore HB Bowers and led 8-3 before getting stuck at 1:33.

The semifinals and second round of consolation will be wrestled at 5:00 p.m. at Jenks High School. Consolation Quarterfinals and Consolation Semifinals will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with the placement matches beginning at 5:00 p.m.
