CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden wins ninth State Championship, breaks State Record

Charles Page High School senior Cheyenne Walden won her ninth State title Saturday afternoon in Yukon. In the 1600 meter run she finished with a State-record performance of 4:57.07, knocking more than three seconds off the former State record of 5:00.75 set in 2003. She was eight seconds ahead of the Runner-Up, and five seconds ahead of her previous personal-best. This was her eleventh first-place medal in a 1600 run, for which she also won State last year.

On Friday she won the 3200 meter run, defeating the Runner-Up by more than twenty-two seconds for her 24th-straight first-place finish and 28th win overall. She hasn't lost in that event since placing third at State during her freshman year.

The Oklahoma State University-commit already held seven State titles coming into this weekend's OSSAA 6A State Championship. When looking only at official OSSAA sanctioned events, Walden is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history.

Sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with his first 6A State Championship.

Not only did he win the State Championship with the fastest performance of his career, but he won with a three-second margin of victory over the runner-up. The 1:53.16 run was a remarkable improvement over his Regional run of 1:55.42, which was already the fastest time of the season for any high school athlete at any meet in Oklahoma, at any classification. His new time was only 1.46 seconds behind the all-time State Tournament record set in 2007.

The next four runners after Baughman were all seniors, leaving him with a 4.35 margin of victory over any runner he'll compete against next year. He also competed in the 1600 run and took tenth place in 4:33.12. He was only 2.7 seconds behind his personal-best and 13.81 seconds behind the champion.

Colton Washington took seventh place in the long jump, leaping 21'11.25".

Kris Edwards took tenth place in shot put with throws of 44'01.50", 45'01.50", and 47'01.50".

The Lady Sandite 3200 relay team, comprised of Walden, Alexis Davis, Elizabeth Watts, and Tiqvah Soap, took eleventh place with a time of 10:29.79.

The boys' 3200 relay team, comprised of Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, Jacob Garbey, and Baughman, took twelfth place with a time of 8:20.89, beating their season-best by nearly two seconds. It was the best Sandite performance since the 2013 team ran a pair of 8:17's to win the Skiatook meet and Regional meet.

Soap placed sixteenth in the 800 meter run with a career-best performance of 2:30.79.
