CPHS Baseball: Sandites run-rule Coconino 12-2 at Phoenix Tournament

The Charles Page High School baseball team (5-6) traveled to Arizona for Spring Break and dropped their first three games at the Best of the West tournament before snapping the streak with a 12-2 run-rule victory.

The Sandites fell 13-3 to Thunderbird High School and 7-1 to Sunnyslope High School, both from Phoenix, then 3-1 to Sunrise Mountain High School in Peoria before topping Flagstaff's Coconino High School in six innings.

Saturday, March 17 - The Sandites loaded the bases with two singles and an error in the first inning against Thunderbird (6-2). A strikeout and a double-play brought an end to their hopes for a fast start, and instead it was the Chiefs who hit four singles and scored a run for the first lead of the game. 

Kameron Adcock hit a lead-off home run to start the second inning, but Sergio Hoyos hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to regain the Thunderbird advantage. Sasha Sneider singled in Jonathan Buhl and Haydn McGeary in the third, then Hoyos scored on a single from Michol Pavlik in the fourth. 

D'Angelo Bacchus walked five in the fifth inning and gave Ty Steelman and Cal Watkins free runs and cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Chiefs brought the rain in the bottom of the inning with four singles, two doubles, and five walks for a double-digit lead to secure the win by run-rule. 

Brock Youngblood (0-3, 6-11) got the loss on the mound, pitching twelve hits, nine runs, two strikeouts, and four walks. Riley Rutledge (0-0) pitched three hits, four runs, and three walks in the final inning.

Monday, March 19 - Sand Springs went through four pitchers and never could find a groove, while Tommy Bonetto got down with six strikeouts and no walks for the Vikings (5-9). 

Drew Bond singled to start the morning, made second on the throw, then scored on a single from Casey Markham. Bonetto struck out two in the first inning and the Vikings came right back in for more damage. Ben Wallace doubled to score Spencer Hochstein, Bond scored one, and Markham scored Wallace to make it 4-0. Hochstein scored again in the fourth, then Larry Cohen scored Casey Carlton on a home run in the fifth for the 7-0 lead. Braden Askew scored Watkins with a single in the sixth to avert the shutout. 

Tyler Ash (0-1) got the loss on the mound, pitching eight hits, one strikeout, and three walks over four innings. John Miller (1-0) pitched one strikeout, Seth Villines (0-0) pitched two walks, and Cale Savage (0-0, 1-1) pitched one hit, one strikeout, and one walk.

Monday, March 19 - Askew (1-2, 4-4) had a solid outing against Sunrise Mountain High School (13-3), pitching four strikeouts with no walks in his six innings on the mound, but the Mustangs landed seven hits for the 3-1 victory. 

The Sandites loaded the bases in the first inning with a walk, an error, and a single from Ash, but a double-play and fly out stranded three runners. Tyler Pruitt doubled and scored on a fly out to take the lead once and for all in the bottom of the first. Pruitt scored again on a ground out from Ethan Snodgrass in the third. 

Sand Springs went on a run in the fourth with singles from Askew, Rutledge, Adcock, and Kyler Copeland, but stranded loaded bases once again. Andy Moreno scored the final run of the game on a single in the fifth inning.

Tuesday, March 20 - Watkins singled in the top of the first, stole second, then scored on an error to give the Sandites the first lead of the game. The Panthers (5-7) retaliated immediately with a double, a single, and two walks for their only lead of the game, then the Sandites put the game away in the third inning.

Steelman hit a single, stole second, and scored on a single from Ash to tie it up. Ash scored on a single from Askew, then Adcock doubled to bring in Askew and Rutledge. Copeland scored Adcock and Miller doubled to bring in Copeland for a 7-2 advantage. 

Watkins scored on an error in the fourth, then Askew scored on a single from Rutledge to make it 9-2. Ash batted in Garrett McCallie and scored on a single from Savage in the fifth, then Miller singled in Rutledge in the sixth for a double digit lead. The Panthers hit fly balls to Ash, Youngblood, and Steelman to bring the game to a close.

Conner Dennis (2-0, 3-0) got the win on the mound, pitching five hits, two strikeouts, and two walks.

The Sandites will return to action Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Greenway High School (2-7) in Phoenix in the last game of the tournament.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites win third straight, 2-1 over Bixby

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (4-3) improved to a winning record for the first time this season with a 2-1 non-district victory over Bixby (4-2). 

Braden Askew (1-1, 4-3) got the win on the mound, pitching seven hits, five strikeouts, and two walks over seven innings. Stevie Owings (1-1) got the loss for the Spartans, pitching six hits, five strikeouts, and two walks over six innings. 

Both teams stranded a runner in the first inning, neither put anyone on base in the second, then the Spartans scored their lone run in the top of the third. Blake Williams walked, Tucker Pawley reached on a fielder's choice, then Jaxson Crull singled to load the bases. Matthew Henderson sent a line drive into left field to score Williams, but Jake Bennett struck out and Crull was tagged out on his way to third to strand loaded bases.

The Sandites nearly tied it up in the bottom of the third as Kameron Adcock and Tyler Ash singled. Adcock was caught stealing home, however, and the Spartans made a fresh offensive. Bixby also hit a pair of singles but Pawley struck out swinging to strand the runners in the top of the fourth.

Sand Springs finally hit pay dirt in the bottom of the sixth after Askew singled and courtesy runner Braden Millican scored on an error to tie it up. Riley Rutledge reached second on that same error, took third on a wild pitch, then scored on another error for the lead. 

The Spartans got a walk in the top of the seventh, but were unable to advance and Ash caught a foul ball in center field to seal the victory. 

The Sandites will travel to Arizona for Spring Break to compete at the Best of the West Tournament against teams from Phoenix and Peoria, starting with Thunderbird High School Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Bixby will play a tournament in Edmond beginning Friday, March 23rd against Class A No. 2 ranked Roff High School (3-1).

CPHS Baseball: Sandites run rule Tulsa Memorial 10-1 in five innings

In their best offensive showing of the season thus far, the Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (3-3) rolled to a 10-1 victory over the Tulsa Memorial Chargers (1-4) Saturday afternoon, securing the win via run rule after five innings.

The Sandites recorded eight hits, three sacrifices, and six stolen bases with only one strikeout, while picking up seven walks from the pitching-challenged Chargers, who went through four players on the mound. Conner Dennis (1-0, 2-0) handled the pitching for Sand Springs, throwing five strikeouts while only surrendering one hit.

The visitors wasted no time in taking the lead as Tyler Ash doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Cale Savage, who made his season-debut after a State Tournament basketball appearance just two days prior. Cal Watkins drew a walk, then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 first inning lead.

The host team scored their only run in the bottom of the first as Trent Wilkerson reached on a fielder's choice, took second on an error, then scored on a single from Zane Carter.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the top of the third with walks from Savage and Lucas Adcock and a double from Braden Askew. Senior pitcher Matthew Erz walked in Savage for a free run, then Kameron Adcock hit a sacrifice fly to score Askew for the 4-1 lead.

Most of the damage came in the top of the fifth as Askew, Lucas Adcock, Malachi Burks, Watkins, and Savage all hit singles. Errors, wild pitches, and a sacrifice fly from Seth Villines contributed to the melee, and the Chargers had one last shot to make a comeback. 

Erz drew a walk, but Eli Harp flied out and Noah Tow grounded into a double play as Villines made a pass to Watkins at second who found John Miller at first to bring the game to a close.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they host the Bixby Spartans (4-1). Memorial will take on Skiatook (1-4) in a district home game Monday at 4:30 p.m.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites top Hilldale 11-6, Ash strikes out six

The Charles Page High School baseball team (2-3) topped Hilldale High School 11-6 Friday night in Muskogee in a back and forth affair with four lead changes. 

The Hornets (1-3) stung first as Dalton Folsom drew a walk, made his way to third on an error, and scored on a single by Jaron Nail in the bottom of the first inning.

Tyler Ash got the start on the mound and struck out the side in the bottom of the third, bringing in the Sandites for their first go-ahead inning. Cal Watkins scored on an error, Askew came in on a balk, and Garrett McCallie scored on a wild pitch for the 3-1 advantage.

The Hornets jumped back out front in the bottom of the inning, however, loading the bases with a trio of walks. Nail and Dawson Neighbors scored on a double from Dylan Walker, then Blake Bishop scored on a throw. 

Ty Steelman (1-0, 1-1) took over pitching and gave up two walks, then Walker scored on an error before Steelman caught TJ Maxwell stealing home to bring the inning to a close.

The Sandites wasted no time in getting back out front, however, with four hits in the top of the fifth. Ash singled in Seth Villines, then Askew doubled to score Ash and Watkins. 

Hilldale loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but Bishop flied out to Villines, who made a pass to Kyler Copeland for a tag at home to save the inning. 

Sand Springs piled on the runs in the next inning with RBI doubles from Lucas Adcock, Villines, and Ash. McCallie, Adcock, Villines, Steelman, and Ash all scored for an 11-5 lead. Dylan Morgan tacked on one last run for the Hornets in the bottom of the seventh, but Walker struck out swinging to bring the night to a close.

The Sandites will return to action Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on the road at Tulsa Memorial High School (1-3). Hilldale will hot Poteau (4-1) in a district battle Monday at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites top Midwest City 8-3, drop two to Enid

Garrett McCallie scored two runs against Midwest City.

The Charles Page High School baseball team (1-3, 0-2) is off to a rough start to the 2018 season. After notching their first win over the Midwest City Bombers Saturday afternoon, they dropped back-to-back district battles against the Enid Plainsmen.

Conner Dennis (0-0, 1-0) got the start on the mound, but John Miller (1-0) got the win.

Midwest City (1-3) took a two-run lead into the bottom of the fifth before Lucas Adcock singled in Tyler Ash and Garrett McCallie scored on a ground-out from Ethan Sartin. 

The Sandites took the lead in the sixth inning, loading the bases with a double from Riley Rutledge, a single from Kameron Adcock, and a walk from Ash.

Kyler Copeland singled in courtesy runner Michael Miller, Lucas Adcock walked in Kameron Adock, Cal Watkins walked in Ash, and Ty Steelman doubled to score Garrett McCallie and Lucas Adcock. Watkins scored the final run of the inning on a fly ball from Braden Askew before a double-play ended the melee. 

The Bombers tried to rally in the top of the seventh and scored one more run thanks to an error at the mound. Singles from Kaleb Bedford and Devan Johnson loaded the bases, but Riley Rutledge sealed the victory with a strikeout.

3/5/2018 Enid 4 Sand Springs 1

The Enid Plainsmen (3-0, 2-0) hosted the Sandites on Monday and took an early one-run lead thanks to a pair first-inning errors. Brett Russell scored three more runs for the Plainsmen in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a 2RBI double and scoring on a wild pitch.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with a pair of walks and a single from Ash. Askew scored on an error to avert the shutout, but Sartin was put out at first to end the game. 

Askew (0-1, 3-3) got the loss on the mound, pitching seven strikeouts, three hits, and one walk.

3/6/2018 Enid 7 Sand Springs 0

The Plainsmen once again came out swinging with two hits in the top of the first, scoring on an error. Bradan Pierce batted in a run in the second, Colby Jarnagan scored on an error in the fourth, then Russell doubled in another run in the fifth. 

Two walks and a single loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and the Plainsmen scored one on a passed ball and another on a sacrifice. 

Brock Youngblood (0-2, 6-10) got the start and the loss on the mound, pitching four strikeouts and seven hits. Miller pitched two innings and gave up one hit and two walks with one strikeout. 

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Hilldale High School (1-2) in Muskogee. 

CPHS Baseball: Sandites fall 7-5 to Coweta in season-opener

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team dropped its season-opener Thursday evening, falling 7-5 in a non-district game at Coweta. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and were 7-1 after four innings before the Sandites made a comeback.

Coweta scored two on the first hit of the game as Seth Marrujo homered in Logan Vaughan. JD Geneva singled and courtesy runner Cash Singleton scored on an error soon after.

Sand Springs got their feet wet in the second inning with doubles from Riley Rutledge and Tyler Ash, the latter scoring the former. 

The home team jumped further out front in the third thanks to a pair of walks, four singles, and an error. Ty Decker, Reed Gaddy, and Jesse McDermott all singled on loaded bases for the 6-1 advantage. Reid Stockman scored the Tigers' final run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Geneva.

Ty Steelman got the Sandites back on track in the fifth, singling in Malachi Burks, then scored on a sacrifice by Rutledge. Cal Watkins and Steelman drew walks to start the sixth. Braden Askew doubled in Watkins and Steelman scored on a single from Rutledge for the final runs of the game.

Brock Youngblood (0-1, 6-9) got the start and the loss on the mound, giving up five hits and three walks with one strikeout over two innings. Steelman took over and pitched four strikeouts and two walks in three innings, while Ash pitched cleanup. 

The Sandites will look to get in the win column Saturday in their home debut against Midwest City at 1:00 p.m.
