CPHS Baseball: Banker strikes out seven, Sandites blank Broken Arrow 6-0

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (12-2, 3-0) earned their sixth-straight victory Monday evening against Broken Arrow (10-6, 5-2) with a 6-0 district shutout. They also won 13-5 Saturday against Joplin (5-2).

Undefeated senior Ben Banker (5-0, 6-0) got the win on the mound against Broken Arrow, throwing his first seven-inning shutout with seven strikeouts, three hits, and four walks. The Sandites recorded eight hits and three doubles in their third-straight win over the Tigers.

The game went scoreless till the bottom of the third when Seth Villines reached on an error and scored on a single from Tyler Ash. Ash came in on a single from Cal Watkins for the 2-0 lead.

The Tigers walked two in the fourth inning and both runners scored on sacrifice bunts. Brycen Peterman and Kyler Murray recorded RBIs to score Keaton Campbell and Ethan Sartin. Villines reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth, then Murray and Ash hit back-to-back doubles for the 6-0 advantage.

Broken Arrow stranded two in the sixth and two in the seventh but couldn’t hit pay dirt. Watkins caught a pop fly to secure the victory.

The Sandites will kick off a four-game road series Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. when they visit the Tigers on their home field. They will play Bartlesville Thursday, Yukon Saturday, and Ponca City Monday before returning to Sand Springs.

The Eagles walked Murray and Burks to start the game and Watkins drove in the first run with a double. Burks came in on a balk and Watkins scored on a sacrifice fly from Cale Savage. Joplin got on the board soon after with an RBI single from Blake Dean.

Watkins hit a double to score Peterman and Murray in the second inning. Sartin walked in on loaded bases in the second and hit an RBI single in the third to score Jacob Snodgrass for a 7-1 lead.

Ash (0-0, 3-2) made his season pitching debut, throwing four strikeouts, five walks, and two hits in just over two innings. He was relieved by Michael Miller in the bottom of the third. Miller gave up an RBI double and the Eagles scored again on a sacrifice fly.

The Sandites had their best inning in the fourth with four runs. Burks doubled and stole home, Watkins and Campbell both singled and scored on errors, and Sartin singled in Snodgrass once again.

Jaxon Skaggs (2-0) took over in the bottom of the fourth and was awarded the win. He walked one and gave up a two-run homer to Grant Jones, but went on to strike out three over two innings without relinquishing another base.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two singles and a walk. Snodgrass doubled to score Burks and Cale Savage for the final runs of the game.
