Sand Springs handily won the first and fourth quarters, but the Lionesses gave them a run for their money in the middle stretch and didn’t give up the final lead till midway through the fourth. Ultimately the Frontier Valley Champions prevailed 57-43 over the Central Oklahoma team, punching their ticket to the State Tournament for the third straight year.

University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson led all scorers, despite not even playing the second quarter, with nineteen points. Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and junior Madison Burris scored fourteen apiece for Sand Springs. 6’3” sophomore standout Aaliyah Moore was the aptly-named leading scorer for Moore, with a team-best seventeen.

The Lady Sandites jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first period with seven points from Johnson, four from Kersgeiter, and three from Burris.

Kersgieter pushed the advantage to double digits early in the second period but missed her next four free throw attempts and the Lions began to claw their way back into contention with threes from Kelsi Fitzgerald, Raychael Harjo, and Peyton Andrews. By halftime their deficit had dropped to only 23-22.

Moore took the lead for the Lions with a pair of free throws early in the third. Johnson reclaimed it, Harjo scored two more for the Lions, then Burris tied it at 27-27. The teams traded leads from there but the Sandites got the final say with a pair of free throws from Taber and a last second layup from Johnson.

The teams continued trading the lead to start the fourth, but the Sandites got hot with five points from Burris and four from Johnson before Moore ended the run with a pair of freebies. By that point it was too far gone, and the Sandites continued to rain down fire, ending the game on a six-point streak.

Moore will get one more chance at a State Tournament appearance, when they take on the loser of Shawnee vs. Bartlesville Saturday afternoon in Claremore. The Sandites will return to action in the State Quarterfinals Thursday, March 7th. The site of the game has yet to be determined.
