CPHS Wrestling: Freshman Carter Young wins State Championship

Three members of the Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team made their way to the OSSAA State Championship finals Saturday evening at Oklahoma City's Jim Norick Arena.

106-pound freshman Carter Young (40-1) concluded his first year as a nearly-undefeated State Champion with an indisputably dominant record. He took on Yukon senior and West Regional Champion Studd Morris (34-7) in the title match and prevailed by 3-0 decision.

The two went neutral through the first and Young took the lead with a quick escape in the second. He scored a takedown with a little over a minute remaining and was all smiles for the rest of the period. The two bucked and rolled their way all over the mat, but the Miller was unable to cut loose. They started the third period neutral and Morris was the aggressor for most of it, but Young took his fair share of shots and held on for the win.

Weir won the Westmoore Open, the Perry Tournament of Champions, the Kansas City Stampede, the Bobby Lyons Invitational, and the 6A-East Regional Championship and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Ram Duals tournament. His only loss was 4-2 in overtime to nationally-ranked Ryan Miller in the Geary Invitational finals.

Young becomes the thirtieth State Champion in Sand Springs Wrestling history.
