CPHS Basketball: Boys top Bishop Kelley 52-50, Richardson scores 25

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (16-6, 9-5) was without their leading scorer, but that didn't stop them from closing conference play with a 52-50 win over 5A No. 10 Bishop Kelley (10-12, 4-10) in the final game of the regular season. 6'4" sophomore standout Davon Richardson took charge with a game-high 25 points to sabotage the Comet Senior Night.

Matthew Gibson kicked things off with a triple for the home team, but the visitors went on a nine-point run with seven from Richardson before Anthony Bomprezzi hit a pair from the charity stripe. Richardson, Gage Fisher, and Cale Savage each scored threes to double the Comets at 18-9 before Michael Pynn scored to end the quarter.

Matthew Price scored a triple to start the second period then Richardson added four more points for a double-digit advantage before the Comets went on a fourteen-point run to tie it at 25-25. Cole Durkee hit a last minute layup for the halftime advantage.

Garrett Salyer tied it up to start the third period then Durkee hit a three and Richardson scored in transition to get back out front. Richardson added two more layups, then it was Ryan Gendron’s turn to score back-to-back on steals, the latter with a dunk. Price got in on the action, Salyer added a free throw, and the Sandites led 38-32.

Salyer made a three to start the final stanza, Savage retaliated and the teams traded blows around a five-six point difference for most of the quarter. Gendron made a three-point play to cut it to four but Kendrick Williams hit a layup right after. Richardson, Zach Coffman, and Williams each hit a pair from the stripe, then Gendron hit a layup. He followed it with a free throw soon after, then hit a three-pointer with ten seconds left to make it a two-point game.

Richardson and Coffman each made a free throw in the final ten seconds. Matt Price missed two, Gendron got a rebound, but hit Price on his long shot and came up short at the buzzer.

Richardson was the only Sandite in double figures, also collecting team highs of seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Gendron led the Comets with seventeen points, followed by Coffman with fourteen.

The Sandites will take on Jenks (8-14) in the first round of the Regional playoffs at Putnam City West next Friday at 6:30 p.m. They previously defeated the Trojans 64-45 in January and 65-52 on Tuesday. Kelley will play Skiatook (10-12) in their Regional at Claremore, also Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Both teams improved on their previous year's performance. The Sandites finished fourth in the Frontier Valley Conference with a 9-5 record, flipping the script from a 5-9 record last season. The Comets finish seventh at 4-10, improving from 3-11 and ninth last season.
