CPHS Basketball: Boys win Highway 97 Rivalry 62-59 over No. 11 Sapulpa, Savage scores 25

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (14-4, 7-3) put on a thriller Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, overcoming their arch rivals from No. 11 Sapulpa (12-7, 4-6) in a down-to-the-wire shootout.

The Sandites came out on top of a wild first quarter, taking the lead out of the gate with back-to-back field goals from Matt Price and Davon Richardson, and only allowing the visitors to tie it up once. They led by as many as seven points before the visitors rallied to tie it at 15-15, then rattled off eight straight to reclaim the lead. Matt Price started off the second period 23-15 but the Chieftains slowly whittled away the deficit to 30-28 before Richardson got the final say of the half.

Richardson scored two more to kick off the second half, but the Cheiftains won the third period 14-10 and briefly took the lead before Cole Durkee hit a three to tie it up at 42-all.

Eli Williams kicked off the fourth with five points for a Cheiftain advantage. Cale and Colt Savage scored back-to-back to make it a one-point game but Hunter Hoggatt drilled a three and scored on a steal to keep the visitors out front.

The Sandites went on a seven-point run with five of those from Colt Savage to take the 53-52 edge. Hayden Casey tied it with a free throw, Richardson scored two more, Hoggatt tied it with a field goal, then Colt Savage scored four more from the stripe to take lead for the final time. Price, Casey, and Richardson exchanged free throws, but the Chieftains never again tied the game.

Colt Savage led all scorers with 25 points and seven rebounds. Price finished with twelve points and five rebounds and Richardson had eleven points and seven rebounds. Casey led the Chieftains with eighteen points, Hoggatt had thirteen, and LaJuan Hughes added twelve.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday in a rematch at No. 6 Union (15-4, 8-2). They previously fell 60-45 to the Redskins in December. Sapulpa will next take on Bixby (7-12, 2-8) who they previously defeated 73-64.
