CPHS Basketball: No. 12 Sandites throttle Ponca City 77-34 behind Colt Savage's 23 points

The No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team had zero difficulty in their season-debut, throttling Ponca City 77-34 Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. Three players scored in the double digits, led by senior standout Colt Savage with 23.

The home team jumped out to an incredible 23-2 lead in the first quarter, kicked off by back-to-back three-pointers from Cale Savage and Cole Durkee. Matt Price made a three-point play off a fouled layup then Davon Richardson scored four-straight for a 15-0 lead before the visitors got on the board. The eldest Savage brother notched his first points of the evening with a steal and a dunk shortly before the end of the first.

The Wildcats fared slightly better in the second stanza but the Sandites won the quarter 21-13 for a 44-15 halftime advantage, led by Colt Savage with eight points. Freshman Marlo Fox and sophomore Josh Minney made their varsity debuts with two points apiece.

Colt Savage ran laps around the visitors in the third quarter for eleven points and Fox drilled a three for a 60-24 lead to start the final stretch. Price scored seven in a row to start the fourth, Brett Boyles and freshman Kendrick Williams scored four points apiece, and Sam Anderson scored the final Sandite goal of the evening.

Fifteen total Sandites got in on the action, including all four varsity freshmen, and ten made their way onto the scoreboard. Colt Savage led in rebounds with eight, Price snagged a team-high five steals and a team-high four assists. Boyles led the Sandites in blocks with two. 

The Sandites will return to action Friday when they host 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley in their first Frontier Valley Conference matchup at 8:00 p.m. It will be the first game of the season for the Comets. Last year the Sandites fell 45-42 to Bishop Kelley in week two but prevailed 46-43 later in the season. Sand Springs finished seventh in the conference last season and the Comets were ninth.

Ponca City will take on 5A No. 7 El Reno (1-0) who hammered No. 16 Piedmont 81-52 in their season-opener.
