Welcome to Tulsa’s Great Raft Race, a historic event that has captured the hearts of participants and spectators for decades. Originally running from 1973 to 1991, the race was discontinued before being revived by the Tulsa Young Professionals (TYPros) in 2015. After a successful run through 2019, the event experienced a hiatus from 2020 to 2022 due to COVID-19, the construction of a new bridge over the river in 2021, and organizational challenges in 2022.

This thrilling race, which launches at Case Community Park in Sand Springs, invites participants to showcase their creativity and navigation skills on the picturesque Arkansas River. While the homemade raft competition remains a highlight, the event has expanded to include other watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and inflatable rafts. This inclusivity allows for a wider range of participants to join in on the fun and compete for the title.

The river course spans a challenging and scenic 8 miles, testing the skills and endurance of the participants. Excitement fills the air as racers navigate the twists and turns of the Arkansas River, aiming for both speed and style. Prizes are awarded not only for the fastest time but also for the best raft theme and costume, adding an element of creativity and whimsy to the competition.

After the exhilarating race, the celebration continues at Tulsa's River West Festival Park. Participants and spectators gather to bask in the post-race festivities, which include live music, food vendors, and a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie. It's a chance to relax, unwind, and share stories of the race with fellow enthusiasts.

Sand Springs, with its miles of easily accessible and well-maintained Arkansas River frontage, remains the best place to view the Great Raft Race. The secure pedestrian access provided by the Highway 97 bridges ensures a safe and convenient experience for spectators, allowing them to fully enjoy the event and cheer on their favorite participants.

While the Great Raft Race experienced interruptions in recent years, its rich history and revival by TYPros serve as a testament to its enduring legacy. This beloved event showcases the adventurous spirit and tight-knit community of Tulsa, bringing people together to celebrate the thrill of river racing.

Beyond the excitement of the Great Raft Race itself, Sand Springs offers a charming and welcoming atmosphere. This close-knit community embraces the event and warmly welcomes visitors who come to witness the spectacle. The city boasts a range of amenities, including parks, restaurants, and local businesses, providing ample opportunities for spectators to make the most of their time in Sand Springs.
