Central Ninth Grade Center freshman Carter Young has sustained only one loss this season on the Class 6A No. 5 ranked Sand Springs Varsity Wrestling Team. Not only is he the winningest member of the team with a record of 31-1, he also has the longest active streak at fourteen.
The defending Dual State Champions (12-3) had a busy schedule this past week, wrestling ten duals in four days. Young went 9-0 during that period and was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the entire tournament at the Third Annual Ram Duals. On Tuesday the Sandites were defeated 43-25 by No. 1 Broken Arrow (7-1), but Young did his part for the team by pinning Jared Hill in 4:58.
On Thursday Young went two-for-two, teching David Boucher 21-6 in 3:39 in the district dual against Bartlesville. He also pinned Muskogee's Rashaan Brownlee in 1:36 to help the Sandites qualify for the Dual State Championship.
The Sandites headed to Owasso Friday for the Ram Duals and while the team went 2-1, Young went 3-0. He pinned State Qualifier Josiah Scates (Bentonville) in 2:42, teched Leyton Warne (Owasso) 15-0, and pinned Logan Fisher (Lebanon) in 59 seconds.
On Saturday the Sandites took fifth place with a 2-1 record and Young came up strong for the team. He won a 6-0 decision over State Qualifier Jason Henschel (Goddard), teched State Qualifier Tate Sauder (Manhattan) 18-3, and pinned Lake Epperson (Comanche) in 1:53.
Young averaged 5.33 points per dual for the Sandites against some of the toughest teams in the midwest, in duals where every point mattered. The 2017 Cadet Freestyle and Greco Roman National Champion is currently ranked fourteenth in the country by FloWrestling. His only high school loss was in overtime in the Geary Invitational finals against No. 8 ranked Ryan Miller from Blair Academy.
The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to No. 8 Jenks (9-1).
